International programs

The College of Engineering is a global institution offering graduate students around the world opportunities for a top-10 engineering education. Our programs include the following.

Carnegie Mellon University Africa

Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) is introducing new models of education, research and development, and the commercialization of information and communications technology (ICT) in a region booming with opportunities. CMU-Africa offers three master's programs. The Master of Science degree in Information Technology (MSIT) has a multidisciplinary curriculum that strikes a fine balance between technology, business, and innovation, preparing the next generation of IT leaders in East Africa. The M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering has strengths in telecommunications and wireless networks, mobile computing, energy systems, and information and communication technology (ICT), with a special emphasis on emerging ICT innovations and applications in Africa. CMU-Africa also offers the Master of Science in Engineering Artificial Intelligence (MS EAI) where students learn to combine a foundation in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science with their engineering, information technology, and software skills through theoretical and practical hands-on study of real-world applications.

Carnegie Mellon CMKL | Thailand

By bridging world-class partnerships with local context, Carnegie Mellon – CMKL | Thailand makes technologies accessible to its society and creates innovations that will benefit Thailand and the Southeast Asia region. By applying Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU) globally acclaimed research and education programs within a regional context, Carnegie Mellon – CMKL | Thailand tackles challenges that will drive future development of Thailand and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) community.

The collaboration between CMU and King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), a leading engineering university in Thailand, aims to significantly expand research and education in the areas of information, computing, and autonomous technologies. Carnegie Mellon – CMKL | Thailand program activities occur both in Thailand and at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. To facilitate collaboration with CMU, CMKL University was established in association with KMITL to administer the program for research and education activities in Thailand.

Carnegie Mellon Portugal

The Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program is a unique, collaborative international program between Carnegie Mellon and several universities and companies in Portugal, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), and focusing on science, technology and graduate education in the following key focused areas:

  • Next generation networks for trusted high-quality services
  • Software engineering for large-scale dependable systems
  • Cyber-physical systems for ambient intelligence
  • Human-centric computing
  • Public policy & entrepreneurship dynamics in new information and communication technologies
  • Applied mathematics

By earning a dual degree from Carnegie Mellon and a Portuguese University, Carnegie Mellon Portugal students are in an excellent position to shape their careers and become leaders in their fields.

Ph.D. in Technological Change & Entrepreneurship

In association with the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program’s Information and Communications Technology Institute (ICTI), this is an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in the area of Technological Change and Entrepreneurship. Graduates of the Ph.D. program receive a degree from Carnegie Mellon University, as well as one awarded by the Portuguese Partner University (either Technical University of Lisbon or Catholic University of Portugal).
